Who Can Apply?
Anyone who is 17 years of age or older is eligible to apply to become a BLEMS Volunteer Trainee. This opportunity is perfect for high school seniors, college students, or young adults looking for a way to get involved in their community while gaining valuable skills and experience in healthcare and emergency services.
Training, Mentorship, and Drills
When accepted into the program, each Volunteer Trainee is paired with a dedicated mentor or Field Training Officer (FTO). This mentor guides trainees through the responsibilities and expectations of being a BLEMS provider, helping them build confidence and competence in the field.
Volunteer Trainees also gain access to monthly agency drills, where they practice core EMS skills, learn about operations, and work side by side with experienced providers. These drills are designed to keep trainees active, engaged, and continually improving their abilities. By blending classroom knowledge with hands-on training, trainees develop the readiness needed to respond in real emergencies.
Pathway to Becoming an EMT
One of the most exciting features of this program is the chance for Volunteer Trainees to attend EMT school with tuition covered by BLEMS. Each year, the number of paid EMT training slots is determined by the BLEMS Executive Director and Board of Directors. Trainees who demonstrate commitment, reliability, and readiness may qualify to be sponsored for this certification course.
Upon successful completion of EMT school and state certification, Volunteer Trainees transition into full Volunteer EMTs with BLEMS, joining our team of providers who serve the community 24/7.
Requirements and Expectations
To remain active and eligible for EMT sponsorship, Volunteer Trainees must meet certain program requirements. These include participation in monthly drills, fulfilling ride-along hours (24 hours per month), demonstrating professionalism, and maintaining engagement with the agency. By setting clear standards, BLEMS ensures that trainees are well prepared to move forward into EMT roles.
