For Emergency Care Call 911

Watch the Documentary

“If EMS Went Dark” explores the challenges, realities, and future of emergency medical services in New York State through the perspectives of providers, medical leaders, and agencies on the front lines of emergency care.

Emergency Medical Services Are There When You Need Them Most

For more than 70 years, Ballston Lake EMS has proudly served our community—responding to emergencies, providing lifesaving care, and standing ready 24 hours a day for the people who depend on us most.

Every day across New York State, EMS providers answer thousands of 911 calls involving:

  • Cardiac arrests

  • Strokes

  • Traumatic injuries

  • Breathing emergencies

  • Overdoses

  • Serious medical crises

EMS professionals are often the first healthcare providers patients encounter during an emergency. They bring advanced medical care directly to homes, roadways, workplaces, schools, and public spaces—wherever help is needed.

Yet despite the critical role EMS plays in public safety and healthcare, EMS in New York State is not uniformly recognized as an essential service.

What Does “Essential Service” Mean?

Police and fire protection are generally recognized and funded as core municipal services.

EMS operates differently.

Emergency medical services across New York are delivered through a combination of:

  • Volunteer agencies

  • Career agencies

  • Municipal services

  • Hospital-based systems

  • Independent nonprofit organizations

Because of this decentralized structure, EMS funding, staffing, and operational support can vary significantly from one community to another.

EMS Is More Than an Ambulance

Behind every ambulance response is an entire system working together:

  • EMTs and paramedics

  • Dispatchers

  • Supervisors

  • Educators

  • Fleet and equipment personnel

  • Community volunteers

  • Partner fire and law enforcement agencies

  • Hospitals and healthcare systems

Emergency medical care begins long before an ambulance arrives at a hospital.
